Greenthumb

I love gardening.

I guess it stems from helping my Grandma and Grandpa Gurney with their garden for years and years.

I've been wanting to plant a garden for a while now, but with limited space it's never come to fruition.

Well thanks to the helpful folks at Anderson's Seed and Garden, I have a little indoor garden planted.

The great news is, I don't have to wait til it's warm outside.

Here's a pic of my jalapeno plants...

I found that eating healthy, particularly eating more veggies, is easier when you have grown them yourself. It's like a reward for all your hard work.

So don't worry about not having a garden plot. Go to your local garden shop and they will help you get started with your own indoor garden.

Happy Planting!

Good Morning!

Today I started my 3-a-days at the gym...

First one.. 5am

I had a stupid night sleep because I kept waking up wondering how much time I have left to sleep. I refused to let myself look at the clock.

But I got up and headed to the gym.

I loved it..and there was hardly anyone there.

I went home and showered and was at work at 7 feeling awake and refreshed. That's a first.

That 1000 calorie boost in the morning has been great, and thanks to the workout, I've been burning higher calories all day today.

I'm gonna like this 5am thing.

Week 7 Results

Well after a disappointing Week 6 I was hopeful for a nice number this week.

But unfortunately this week was sooo hectic, I didn't make it to the gym very often.

But I did watch my calorie intake and tried to do as much physical exercise I could.

So here are the results for Week 7 on the road to 100.

Week 6 Weight - - 291lbs

Week 7 Weight - - 286lbs

______________________________

5 lbs = Total Weight loss of 34 lbs

I'll Take It!!

I am happy with this number, considering the lack of focus at the gym this week.

Make sure you tune in next week.

I will be starting my 3-a-days, with the first workout at 5am

My goal is to be into the 270's by March 1st.

Thank you all for your support.

Upping my Game

Each day i have a goal of burning at least 4500 calories per day...

Yesterday I decided it was time to add another thousand to that number to make it at least 5500 calories per day.

Biggest Loser contestants often burn around 6000 or 7000 per day.

That would be fun, but I just simply don't have the time.

So I can reach my 5500 goal by adding another workout. Morning workouts are so beneficial, it sets the tone for the rest of the day. It gets the heart rate up, the metabolism going, and makes you feel good.

With two workouts in the evening, I kinda have no choice but to have a morning workout.

Which means... 5am.

I am pretty excited... seriously!

People

Hope you had a chance to catch Biggest Loser last night.

They are now showing a lot more of Rulon and Justin.

Although they are showing more of them, there is less and less of them to see..

Here's a pic from their first weigh in.

Last night Rulon passed the 100LB mark, and Justin is close behind.

They are doing awesome.

I know this sounds corny as can be, but watching them and the other Biggest Loser contestants has become my weekly dose of motivation.

P.S. Rulon also made ink in the February 14th issue of People.. Pretty cool..

Big Mouth, Big Dipper

The other night we were doing circuit training, we had about 14 different stations including things like push-ups, squats, and other aerobic and anaerobic workouts.

One of the stations was the body dip. I had never done one of these before. The picture below will give you a good visual of what a body dip is...

Basically you just raise and lower yourself at a controlled pace. It is an awesome tricep workout, especially for someone with T-Rex arms, like yours truly.

Since this was my first time, Kamie explained the less intense version of a body dip. This variation is to have your legs bent, instead of straight out in front of you.

Well here I go....

I try the less intense version. It was pretty easy, but tough enough for my little T-Rex appendages.

Then, out of nowhere, I said. "These are pretty easy"

Words that should never be said to a trainer... haha

Right then Kamie switched me to the other variation, and boy oh boy. That was a lot tougher.

She made me do them to the point where after I was done, I could not lift my arms above my head.

In retrospect, I am glad i said it. That is what having a trainer is all about. They push you farther and harder than you would ever push yourself, they make you do things you didn't think was possible..

If you don't want to push yourself...

I recommend keeping your big trap shut!

Ode to Valentines Day

ODE TO VALENTINES DAY

To all the ladies sweetly divine
Who want to be my Valentine,

I'm afraid this year I have other plans.
A disappointing fact, my dear female fans.

For I haven't the time to be eating
Or romantic Shakespeare repeating.

No cookies or candy or roses
I'm sorry for the problem this poses.

But you see, I've got to get slim.
So tonight, my sweetheart is Gym!

- J.K. Sagers -

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY EVERYBODY!

Here are the results for Week 6 on the road to 100

Week 5 Weight - - 291lbs

Week 6 Weight - - 291lbs

I'm not gonna lie, it's a disappointing number...

But I did lose inches, and that is what really matters.

So no worries, I'm not discouraged, nor am I throwing in the towel..

I predict next week to be big!

Stay tuned.

Using Bad for Good

Well today has been a really stupid day.

I woke up in a bad mood this morning and not sure why. It just happens sometimes I guess.

I also got that stupid feeling again that I'm not gonna put up a big number this week. grrr..

Then to top it off...

I hear the announcement that Jerry Sloan and Phil Johnson are resigning. Boy, that was like a blow to the gut. Regardless of what you think about Slaon, or whether it was time for a change, he will surely be missed. For a lot of us, he is the only Jazz coach we remember, and now the "old school coaches" are all but extinct from the league. Sad.

Needless to say, I wasn't wanting to go to the gym AT ALL.. It felt like a perfect day to just lay back and try to unwind.

A few months ago, this definitely would have been a pizza night. :)

But I dragged myself to the gym anyway... And ya know what?

Working out when your mad is actually a good thing. I worked out a lot harder, had more endurance, and the best part... I felt a lot better when I was done.

So it's OK to get mad.. It's what you do with your anger that is key.

You could take the familiar road, which is soothe it with junk food..

Or do what the "new you" wants you to do. Take that anger to the gym and let it loose.

Family Matters

Here's a pic of my family the day my sister got married.
I look like Andre the Giant standing next to them..

I just wanted to clarify something that I have been getting a ton of questions about..
In the KSL news story it mentioned that I have cut off communication with my family.

That is partly true.

People keep asking me.. "Are you mad at your family?"

"Is your family enablers?"

"Do you blame your family for making you fat?"

The answer.... Well.. Yes!

Just Kidding!!

I am not mad at them, nor blaming them for anything. Those of you who watch Biggest Loser know that the contestants are not allowed to see or talk to their families while they are on the show. It adds another element of motivation.

I am trying to shadow the show as much as possible. The quicker I drop the hundred pounds, the sooner I get to see them.

I have not cut off total communication with them either... I still talk to them on the phone.

So I hope this clears things up.

In summary, I love my family, I blame me for being fat, and the next time I see them I will be 100 pounds lighter.

The Return of Elder Sagers

Today I was able to fit into the suit that I wore on my mission...

And was even able to button the buttons.

In June it will be 9 years since I got home. crazy!

I haven't been able to fit into that suit for probably the last 7 years.

A good day!

Super-Bloat Sunday

One of my favorite events associated with food is Superbowl Sunday!

Every year I look forward to stuffing my face with delicious food and sitting back to enjoy the game.

So this year I decided to let my hair down a little and just enjoy Superbowl Sunday without having to worry about calories.

So I tried it, and needless to say, I was a huge disappointment...

I couldn't even finish my first plate of food.

And for the rest of the night, and even as I type this, I feel like this.

Blah!

I tried hard to be the old me yesterday, and I couldn't do it.

That is a good thing!

Week 5 Results

Week 5 has been an exciting week. With all the attention from the KSL story I am now more motivated (and somewhat forced to, by a follow-up story haha) to finish what I started.

Last week's number was not impressive, but we all have those. So this week I was determined to get over that little plateau.

Did I do it??

Here are the results for Week 5 on the road to 100

WEEK 4 WEIGHT - - 297LBS
WEEK 5 WEIGHT - - 291LBS
_________________________________

6LBS - - TOTAL WEIGHT LOSS = 29LBS

Plus another inch off the waist!!

A very good week.

Now we move to week 6.

6 weeks of anything has always sounded like a long time to me. But now here we are and I feel like we just started. Time sure is a-movin'

A hearty thank you to all!

T-Rex Arms

I have come to the conclusion that I have T-Rex arms..

Little weak arms on a big body.

I came to this conclusion through the many exercises we do, which uses just our own body weight as resistance.

I always knew I had pretty sissy arms, but lately it has been more evident.

If I was hanging on to a cliff and had to pull myself up to safety...

No way i could do it. ha ha..

I guess the bright side is.. they are getting stronger.

I see a bunch of people around the gym with T-Rex arms as well, so I know I'm not alone out there. :)

Hey tomorrow is weigh-in day for Week 5. Man, this week flew by!

A Shout-Out to the Hometown Crowd

Since my story hit the airwaves a few days ago I have been getting a lot of comments and compliments from my good friends in Vernon..

I'm sure a lot of you know that is where I am from and where my heart will always be.

For those of you who don't know.. Vernon is small town, south of Tooele, with the population of about 220. Everybody knows everybody and everybody looks out for everybody. It's a great place to live.

Most people like to go on vacation to relax. When I need a break, I head to Vernon for a few days.

The above picture is the Silver Sage, the only cafe'/general store/gas station in town.

Thank you all out there for your support. It's an awesome feeling to have an entire town rooting for you.

I may live in Logan, but I will always be a Vernonite!

See you all on the 4th of July!

1st Month Recap

One month is over, and what a month it's been...

Do you know how many times I have started to lose weight and then gave up??? Far too many to count.

The fact that I have made it a month is a huge success for me.

Of course you guys are making it easy for me. All of your comments and calls and texts are 100% pure motivation.

So here's a final recap.

I started Jan 1st at 320, and ended Jan 31st at 297. A loss of 23lbs.

My gut measured 56" on Jan 1st, and measured 51.5" 31 days later.

Pretty good for a month of work.

Keep in mind, the goal weight each month is 17lbs. That ensures my 100 pound loss by July 4th.

That 6 pound reserve I have built up will come in handy further down the road as it becomes harder to drop the pounds.

So here's to another good month!

Thanks for sticking with me.

In case you missed it!

Here's the KSL story in case you missed it.

Gettin' Attention

I know I have told you this before, but I am amazed at how you guys have supported me through this blog and on Facebook. I really had no idea it would be such a hit.

Now it is even getting more attention.

Yesterday i got an email from a gal I went to school with who is now a producer at KSL. She found my blog and was interested in doing a story on my weight loss journey and working with Kamie.

So later that day, the cameras were rolling as the reporter interviewed me and Kamie.

Then the cameraman took a bunch of shots of me working working out. haha.. I'm sure I looked ridiculous.

About an hour later they were done. I am anxious to see what they came up with.

It will air tonight. I am not sure which broadcast. But keep an eye out for it.
